As always with all major updates, a Beta preview is first organized, before the stable version is released. That’s what Xiaomi did with it’s latest MIUI 12 Android skin, which the stable version is now rolling out after a successful beta preview.
Meanwhile, early adopters of the update complained about the inability to use contactless payment via Google Pay, which is a common issue with Beta releases or an unlocked bootloader. However, most people that have the issue upgraded to MIUI 12 via updater app and had the Stable beta ROM. Affected users complained about it on the Mi community forum, and the company promised to fix the issue.
But unfortunately, the company is yet to release a statement on a possible fix. Also, all our efforts to confirm if the issue is fixed from then never got any reply. Hence, we had to reach out to those on Stable MIUI 12 ROM to confirm from them, if they’re still having issues making contactless payment via Google Pay. From the response, it seems there has been a fix, or it was only affecting those running the Beta version of MIUI 12.
The few people we reached out to, never had issues making payments through Google Pay. It obvious the issue was due to the Beta ROM. Thus, if you’re still having issues using Google Pay to make a contactless payment, you should check if you’re running a stable or Beta ROM. Also, check if you have the device bootloader unlocked as that will make Gpay to malfunction.
Some device operations are limited when the bootloader is unlocked. It’s because the moment you unlock your device, it becomes insecure. To fix that, you should relock the bootloader, and if the issue is because of a Beta ROM, you can download the stable ROM from here. Also, try and clean the cache and data of the Google Pay app and see if that works as well.
