Xiaomi has supposedly replaced the MIUI updater app with Google’s after the latest update in some select devices. The idea is for a seamless update download due to some adjustments made on the server. However, this won’t change Xiaomi’s update policy as both phones will continue receiving security patch updates quarterly, which is due for a change.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro started getting a new stable update based on Android 11. It arrived with the much-anticipated MIUI 12.5 build, which has since arrived for global users. The update first seeded in China before extending to Global and Russian users. And going by the latest report, the update has replaced the MIUI updater app with Google’s. It also replaced that on the Mi 10, going by the recent report. However, it’s unclear if the change is across all boards or for a specific region. We hope to find out about that in the coming days.
Again, the changes won’t affect the company’s update policy as it is only to improve update downloads due to the changes made on the server. Also, updates will still arrive through the Updater App, only that the UI has changed to Google’s. For now, only the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Mi 10 users have seen this change. It might be extended to other units with future updates.
That said, if you notice any changes like that, you should panic as it’s not a bug. The company is probably trying to address some issues faced by Mi fans when downloading updates. Hopefully, the latest development fixes that persistent problem and probably stop OTA from disappearing if not downloaded immediately. Also, Xiaomi is currently working on heating issues by introducing what they called ‘Balanced and Performance mode.’ Hopefully, it’ll arrive for global ROM users with MIUI 13 as it is exclusive to Chinese ROM users at the moment.
