What we know about the Google Tensor G3

According to a tipster from Android Authority, Kamila Wojciechowska, the upcoming Google Tensor G3 is expected to bring significant improvements compared to its predecessors. The new chipset is rumored to feature a 1+4+4 core arrangement, deviating from the 2+2+4 layout seen in the previous Tensor and Tensor G2.

The Tensor G3 is said to include a single powerful Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.0GHz, followed by four Cortex-A715 mid-cores running at 2.45GHz. This marks an upgrade from the Cortex-A78 processor found in the Tensor G2. For the “little” cores, the Tensor G3 is rumored to employ four Cortex-A510 cores running at 2.15GHz, which are more contemporary than the Cortex-A55 cores used in earlier Tensor iterations.

These changes are expected to bring notable improvements to the CPU’s performance and efficiency, while also introducing ARMv9 compatibility for enhanced security. The Pixel 8 is said to leverage this update by incorporating Arm’s Memory Tagging Extensions (MTE) to enhance protection against memory-based attacks. Additionally, the Google Tensor G3 is rumored to eliminate 32-bit capability, which Google had already abandoned on the Pixel 7.

Another significant enhancement is anticipated in storage, as the Tensor G3 will support the faster and more efficient UFS 4.0 storage technology found in devices like the Galaxy S23 Ultra and OnePlus 11. In terms of the GPU, the Tensor G3 is rumored to feature the new Arm Mali-G715 Immortalis GPU.

Furthermore, the Google Tensor G3’s “BigWave” block is expected to enhance video decoding and encoding capabilities. It is reported to retain the AV1 decoding of the Tensor G2 while adding AV1 encoding for up to 4k30. The CPU in the Pixel 8 is expected to enable encoding up to 8k30, although it remains uncertain if Google will utilize this technology.

The Google Tensor G3 is set to debut alongside the Google Pixel 8, and it is anticipated to deliver improved photo and video quality, potentially surpassing the achievements of the Pixel 7. We will have to wait and see how it performs once it is released.
