Here’s the crux of the matter: select original Netflix shows and movies now support spatial audio, although the spatial audio is already available on iPhones and pads. We can’t still leave out that this is an amazing tweak from the streaming giant, Netflix.
It is quite interesting to note that the brand is partnering with Sennheiser to convert sounds surrounding a user into a somewhat spatial audio representation that can be used on any headphone or stereo speaker.
Netflix shows and movies now support spatial audio features: requirements and availability
As Netflix shows and movies now support spatial audio features, Netflix mentioned that there isn’t any specialized equipment required for this. However, it is important to note that “select” Netflix shows and movies now support the spatial audio feature, that is, not all movies on the platform.
For those who are Netflix subscribers, you can simply search spatial audio and see which select movies support the feature. Currently, the movies that have support for this impressive feature are Stranger things(Season 4), The Witcher, and Red Notice, although we hope other interesting movies feature it soon.
The brand mentioned that as Netflix shows and movies now support spatial audio features, it “helps to translate the cinematic experience of immersive audio to any stereo, so the work creators do to bring you into the story happens no matter what device you use to watch Netflix”. The streaming giant made sure to make the feature available to all regions.
Courtesy of Sennheiser, the spatial audio feature uses AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio, which according to Sennheiser “isn’t another mix. Instead, it is created from open, industry-standard deliverables, like ADM and IAB files. The renderer easily fits into standard encoding pipelines. It outputs a standard two-channel audio file that can be delivered as a drop-in replacement for stereo”.
It is also worth noting that the Netflix spatial audio doesn’t bring in the head tracking abilities from Airpod and Airpod Pro and the multi-channel sound setup jeopardizes its experience.
