Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 now official: list of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones

The long-awaited Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is now official and this chipset speaks efficiency with a lot of features integrated into it by Qualcomm – it has got unique improvements compared to its predecessor, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. But what improvements?

Official features of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

First off, the most sought-after feature in every chipset – the CPU and GPU. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU is offering 35 percent higher performance and 40 percent higher efficiency (that’s a whole lot). We’ve got the same clock speeds in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus but rather different cores.

Yes, it’s an octa-core, but the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is getting the one prime X3 core(which delivers a whole lot according to earlier reports) clocked at 3.2GHz, four performance cores clocked at 2.8GHz to assist with the intense workloads multitasking, and lastly, three efficiency cores clocked at 2.0GHz.

Moving on to memory, it’s on a whole new “fast” level. The chipset supports LP-DDR5X up to 4200MHz( an increase from LP-DDR5 with 3200MHz) as well as UFS 4.0( an upgrade from UFS 3.1). In the GPU section, Qualcomm integrated 25 percent higher performance and 45 percent better efficiency. There’s the hardware accelerated ray on this chip plus it supports Vulkan 1.3(the first on a Snapdragon chipset) alongside OpenGL ES 3.2 – something gamers will love to experience.

Still giving you a takeaway on gaming, the smartphone supports device refresh rates of up to 144Hz from 60Hz(although 4K for 60Hz), external displays of 4K at 60fps and streams of up to 8K at 60fps with HDR. According to the brand, Samsung’s 200MP and Sony’s Digital Overlap HDR should work smoothly with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Furthermore, this chip can take on three 36MP sensors at 30fps or a single 200MP camera( 108 MP cameras are also a smooth ride).

Videos are also a walk in the park with this chip as it supports 8K at 30fps, 4k at 120fps and 720p at 960 fps(for slow-motion videos). Plus, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset supports HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG which helps get a better video visual(and together with AI performance that’s 4.35x, you should be getting the best out of photography with this chip).

Of course, the chip supports mmwave and sub-6GHz 5G connectivity but there’s an upgrade in that of WiFi. The chip supports the new WiFi 7, courtesy of the FastConnect 7800 system. Lastly, some of the Android makers to debut with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip are

  • Sony
  • Nubia
  • Red Magic
  • OPPO
  • ZTE
  • Meizu
  • Honor
  • iQOO
  • OnePlus
  • Asus ROG
  • Motorola
  • Vivo
  • Xiaomi
  • Sharp

Most of these Android makers will be putting out smartphones with this chip before the end of the year, although we don’t know which will come up first. That said, Qualcomm (in its press release) didn’t mention Samsung or even the Samsung Galaxy S23 series surprisingly.
