Qualcomm continues to dominate the mobile chip segment and will be looking to add a new 5nm SoC to its stables later this year. It will be Qualcomm’s first 5nm SoC and the successor of the high-performing Snapdragon 865 SoC. The processor will answer Snapdragon 875, and some of the features have started surfacing on the internet.
With Qualcomm’s next-generation SoC in the pipe, we can also speculate about the Snapdragon 875 phones. However, let’s look at the possible features that will be arriving with the processor.
According to a recent report, the chip will be manufactured by TSMC. The manufacturing process will be on 5nm and coupled with the new kryo 685 architecture, there will be a huge improvement in the performance, at least 40%, over the predecessor.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 phones will feature the Adreno 660 GPU. It’s expected to support up to 180Hz display refresh rate. We have seen OEMs equipped their high-end device with up to 120hz refresh rate, and Qualcomm will look to add more options with the Snapdragon 875 SoC. Also, the Qualcomm Spectra 580 image-processing engine, which will support up to 300MP modules.
The chip will make use of the Qualcomm X60 50 modem-RF system. It will have more 5G bands and high-speed internet connectivity. However, it’s still unclear if the company will integrate the 5G modem or make it optional. The latter looks more likely, considering that the 5G conspiracy has led to the vandalization of some 5G masts.
Also, the COVID-19 pandemic has put many things on hold, including 5G deployment, as such, it will take time before countries fully adopt 5G.
It will be a perfect marketing strategy for Qualcomm to design the X60 modem separately, as not all countries where OEMs sell their phone have adopted 5G.
Meanwhile, the chip will also deliver 3G/ 4G internet connectivity. Expect the maximum download speed to exceed 8.5Gbps and 3.5Gbps upload speed on 5G, thanks to the mmWave and sub-6 standard. Other features of the SoC include:
Check out the list of Snapdragon 765 5G phones
- External 802.11ax, 2 x 2 MIMO, and Bluetooth Milan
- Compute Hexagon DSP with Hexagon Vector eXtensions and Hexagon Tensor Accelerator
- Quad-channel package-on-package (PoP) high-speed LPDDR5 SDRAM
- Lower-power audio subsystem combined with Aqstic Audio Technologies WCD9380 and WCD9385 audio codec.
The Snapdragon 875 SoC will be looking to make its official debut in December at Qualcomm’s year-end conference and annual unveiling. But as things are at the moment, with many OEMs still trying to recover from the COVID-19 effect, the launch may be pushed to early next year. Nevertheless, we expect to learn more about the chip in the coming weeks and probably a time frame for the launch.
Possible Snapdragon 875 phones
Since the specs of the chip have started coming, we deem it important to alleged phones that will first adopt the processor. Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 phones will start arriving from Q1 of 2021, and with how OEMs released their flagship phones, Xiaomi, Samsung, Sony, ZTE, LG will release Snapdragon 875 phones first.
We are looking at Xiaomi Mi 11, Samsung Galaxy S21, Asus Zenfone 8, Sony Xperia 2 II… Unfortunately, the list is empty at the moment, but we promise to update this post once there’s a new development.
