Enyinnaya Ikenna Alex, Head of Marketing at SoniBaze Digital, does not mince words when describing what he sees as one of the most consequential gaps in Nigeria’s workforce. Employers across the country’s fastest-growing sectors are actively looking for trained digital professionals, and the supply, he argues, is nowhere close to meeting that demand.
“The opportunities in Nigeria’s digital economy are real and they are growing,” said Enyinnaya, who leads strategic marketing initiatives at the Abuja-based agency. “But a significant number of Nigerians who want to participate in that economy do not have the certifications or the practical skills that employers are looking for. That gap does not close on its own.”
SoniBaze Digital, headquartered in Karu, Abuja, has moved to address that gap directly through the SoniBaze Tech Academy, a professional training and certification institution operating within the same ecosystem as the agency. The Academy offers programmes spanning cybersecurity and ethical hacking, web development and design, data analysis and data science, artificial intelligence, mobile app development, graphic design, digital marketing, SEO and SEM, UI/UX design, project management, cloud computing, DevOps engineering, and virtual assistance.
The breadth of that offering is deliberate. Enyinnaya said the Academy’s curriculum was shaped not by what training institutions typically offer, but by what Nigerian employers, international remote work platforms, and the agency’s own hiring experience have consistently flagged as the skills most difficult to find in the local market.
“We did not build the Academy around what was convenient to teach,” he said. “We built it around what the market actually needs. Those are two very different starting points and they produce very different outcomes.”
The Academy operates through three formats designed to accommodate different learners. Physical classes run from the Karu campus for students who benefit from in-person instruction and peer interaction. A fully online option extends access to learners across Nigeria and beyond the country’s borders. Corporate training programmes allow organizations to bring structured digital skills development directly to their teams, tailored to the specific tools and challenges their businesses face.
Enyinnaya pointed to the Academy’s location within a live, operational digital marketing agency as one of its most significant structural advantages over standalone training centres. Students learning web development, digital marketing, or data analysis at the SoniBaze Tech Academy are doing so inside an organization that applies those same disciplines to real client campaigns every working day.
“There is a version of training where you learn techniques in a classroom and then spend the first year of your job figuring out how any of it applies in practice,” he said. “That is not what we offer. The gap between theory and application is much smaller here because the application is happening around you the entire time you are learning.”
Nigeria’s tech and digital sectors have expanded significantly over the past decade, with fintech, e-commerce, healthtech, and media companies all generating sustained demand for professionals with certified digital competencies. At the same time, cybersecurity threats targeting Nigerian financial institutions, telecoms, and government bodies have grown in both frequency and sophistication, sharpening demand for trained security professionals in particular.
Enyinnaya said SoniBaze Digital views the Academy not as a peripheral initiative but as a core part of the organization’s long-term mission, one that sits alongside its work serving business clients rather than below it.
“We are in the business of growing brands and growing people,” he said. “The agency side and the Academy side are expressions of the same belief, which is that Nigeria has the talent and the ambition to compete at the highest level. Our job is to build the structures that allow that talent to develop and find its place.”
Applications for the current intake are open across all programmes and learning formats.
