Google has been testing its next Android OS update since February. That was when the first developer preview build arrived, followed by another one in March. The first public beta update was seeded in April, making Android 15 available to more people. Since then, we have spotted some features that might arrive for stable users when the update starts rolling out for everyone.
Android 15 will not bring UI changes as Google focuses on adding some much-needed features. The tech company is working on Private space, theft detection lock, new health connect features, app pairs, app archiving, partial screen sharing, and Notification cooldown.
Unfortunately, some of these features will be exclusive to Pixel phones, but a few smartphone companies, like Samsung, already have some features on their One UI OS. Nevertheless, we expect these new additions on third-party Android phones when they become available for everyone.
The Top Android 15 features
Private Space: Google has been working on this feature for some time. It was reported some months ago after the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1 release. It has been under development and will likely become available for everyone with Android 15. Like the Secure Folder on Samsung phones, you can create a different lock for the Private Space where you hide sensitive files and apps.
Theft Detection Lock: As the name suggests, Google will try to detect when your phone has been snatched. If someone steals your device and tries to run, the phone will sense the motion and lock the screen immediately. In addition, the phone locks automatically when it detects multiple failed login attempts or attempts to disconnect the phone.
Google is making it harder for those stealing people’s phones this time as the new feature will prevent setting up the device with a new Google account. It means when someone steals your phone and doesn’t have your Google account details, the phone becomes useless.
App Pair: Spilt-screen has been available on Android for years, and Google will improve the feature in Android 15. App Pair will allow users to save their favorite split-screen combination for swift access. There will be a shortcut on the home screen for opening both apps in split-screen.
Partial Screen Sharing: Another feature that Google has been working on that will arrive for everyone with Android 15. It will allow users to record or share a single app instead of the entire screen when using a screen recorder. The recording will pause once you leave the app you pre-selected before starting the recording.
Notification Cooldown: Google will lower your notification volume when you keep getting them from the same app. It will be interesting to see how that works when it finally becomes available for everyone.
Improved Health Connect: Android 15 will include new data types across fitness, nutrition, and others. In Android 15 Beta 2, Google introduced skin temperature and training plans as new data types.
App Archiving: Google has limited the feature to apps installed via the Play Store but will integrate it at the OS level with Android 15. It means third-party apps can be archived/restored with the upcoming Android OS. The feature saves storage while keeping the user data around.
Google will supposedly start pushing Android 15 to stable users in October. The rollout begins with Pixel phones before reaching other eligible smartphones from other phone makers. We hope to learn more about these features and how they behave when they become available to everyone.
