User choice billing helps Android apps use their payment system together with Google App Play system billing for apps distributed via the Play store. In other words, it’s a way to ease transactions on Android apps by not directing you to the web.
Further details on the User Choice billing
The Big G announced bringing in User Choice billing in March but now, Spotify is getting in on User Choice billing with the feature spreading to other markets gradually. Developers of non-gaming apps in Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan and the European Economic Area got User Choice billing in September and Spotify will be joining the party.
“Going forward, Android users will soon be able to choose how to pay for their Spotify subscription in the way that best suits them.” The first test implementation took off in select countries(more markets will be joining in soon) with Google Play seen near Spotify (credit/debit card) in the “Choose How to Pay” section.
It is worth noting that those using the Google Play User Choice billing benefit from “parental controls, family payment methods, subscription management, Google Play gift cards, and Play Points.” Apps will, however, have to pay the applicable fees which will be used to support “continued investments across Android and Google Play”.
The UCB will be extended to the US, Brazil and South Africa. Meanwhile, Bumble is also joining in on the UCB train. Google is “working with their teams and we anticipate their users will begin seeing this choice in-app in select countries in the coming months.”
