It seems some Redmi Note 9 Pro/9S users are still facing the Widevine L1 issues on their phones. The issue, was supposedly fixed months ago when a stable MIUI 11.0.11.0 based Android 10 update arrived on the device. However, it seems not many people know about the fix, or perhaps, a recent update has broken the Widevine L1 support on the Redmi Note 9 Pro/9S again.
For starters, the Widevine is a licensing that’s integrated into smartphones to access videos from video streaming websites. Therefore, if your device doesn’t support Widevine, it will be impossible to stream video from popular streaming channels like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime. Luckily, all Android phones support Widevine, but depending on the category a device supports, the video playback quality can be limited.
The three categories of Widevine include;
- L1 – allows playback up to 4K ( device max resolution support)
- L2 – Limits playback to 720p only
- L3 – Can only stream at 480p.
By default, the Widevine L3 is active and might be what is causing the Widevine L1 issue on Redmi Note 9 Pro/9S. However, there’s a quick fix, posted on the Mi community forum by a Moderator. It has been months, though, but most people confirmed the fix worked for them. They had to upgrade their device Widevine level to L1.
And fortunately, the thread is still open. You would be able to fix the problem by yourself, and hopefully, start streaming videos at Full HD quality and more again.
