Early this year, Xiaomi phone users complained they couldn’t install Google Play services/store on their devices. And because that started after the upgrade to MIUI 12.5, Mi fans believed it was a bug, but it wasn’t. Xiaomi, after some time, came out to clarify the issue, saying they have restricted the installation of Google Mobile Services on their ‘Chinese phones’ due to compliances. Of course, Google is banned in China, and that’s why no ROM developed for use in that region comes pre-installed with Google Play Services.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi said they might review the decision if the demand is high, and it seems to be happening. For some time now, the company has brought back Google Play Services for some mid-range phones. Yes, mid-range phones. If you’re using a premium Xiaomi phone, you’re not supposed to have issues installing GMS. In fact, you don’t need to side-load the app as you only need to toggle a button. Check this post on how to enable Google Play Services support on premium phones. (Snapdragon 855 and up).
Unfortunately, mid-range phones are not getting the same treatment. And because these phones are more affordable when shipped from China, is essentially why the demand for Chinese phones is high. Also, Xiaomi seems to prioritize devices for its home country, which always comes with more features. But even in the current situation, there are affordable Xiaomi phones with Google Play Services support. Check the list below.
