YouTube Music, the popular music streaming platform, has undergone a revamp that extends its offerings beyond music. The brand has introduced the ability to listen to podcasts within the app, expanding its podcast support globally. Previously available only in the United States, the addition of podcasts to YouTube Music provides users with a more diverse listening experience. Let’s explore the details of this exciting update.
YouTube Music now supports Podcasts globally: further details
The “Podcasts” category now joins the existing five mood filters on the Home menu, allowing users to easily access a dedicated feed for podcasts. The feed includes carousels such as “Keep listening,” “Recommend episodes,” “Your programs,” and various categories like Gaming, True Crime, Political Commentary, and more. Similar recommendations will also be available in the Explore section, facilitating podcast discovery.
YouTube Music has integrated podcasts into the Library tab’s high-level filter alongside Playlists, Songs, Albums, and Artists. Users can now access their subscribed podcasts, which will appear among other songs, albums, playlists, and artists in their Library. The “New Episodes” and “Episodes for Later” auto playlists further enhancing the podcast listening experience.
The Now Playing panel within YouTube Music offers improved controls for podcast playback. Users can take advantage of 10-second rewind and 30-second forward buttons, adjust playback speed, set a sleep timer, and access additional details about the podcast episode. The “Details” section replaces lyrics, providing comprehensive information about the episode, including the option to bookmark and download episodes for offline listening.
Both offline and background playback of podcasts are available to all users, even without a YouTube Premium membership. However, it’s important to note that host-read endorsements or sponsorship messages may be included during podcast listening sessions. Additionally, YouTube Music users in Brazil and Canada can now enjoy podcast reports with local language support, further expanding the platform’s global reach.
YouTube Music currently supports only podcasts and channels that have video versions of episodes. This may result in limited options due to the lack of support for RSS feeds at present. However, with YouTube’s vast podcast library and continued efforts to expand its offerings, more diverse content is likely to become available in the future.
