According to the most recent Canalys data, global smartphone shipment continued to fall during the January-March quarter, with 269.8 million devices sold. The figure is 13% lower than the same period last year, continuing the downward trend witnessed in previous quarters due to a combination of issues such as inventory build-up and insufficient customer demand.

Samsung sold 60.3 million smartphones in the first quarter, accounting for a 22% market share. The rebound was caused by Samsung’s redesigned Galaxy S and Galaxy A portfolios. Apple placed in second place with 58 million units and a 21% market share. Cupertino continues Apple experience high demand for its iPhone 14 Pro series, and it was the only manufacturer on the list with a positive year-over-year increase. Xiaomi finishes out of the top three with 30.5 million shipments and an 11% market share, but it also has the biggest yearly fall in market share.

Oppo (26.6 million shipments) and vivo (20.9 million) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with 10% and 8% market shares. Looking ahead, Canalys analysts see some positive momentum for OEMs in the second half of the year as channel inventory levels improve. So that’s, the Q1 2023 global smartphone shipment. Samsung is off to a good start this year. However, other Android OEMs and Apple have got products (although Samsung too) to release this summer. This might offset Samsung’s first place – well, time will tell.
