Google revealed that it is rolling out the option to require your fingerprint to access Incognito tabs in Chrome for Android, a feature that was first spotted in development last year.  In other words. Chrome for Android will be getting fingerprint unlock for incognito tab, let’s take a look at what it’s all about.

This functionality, which was first introduced to Chrome for iOS in early 2021, only needs you to “Unlock Incognito” using your fingerprint after restarting the Android browser. On the Incognito splash screen, you can also choose to “See other tabs,” and an overflow menu will let you close any open settings or private browsing tabs. Chrome is still being forced closed, which removes any Incognito pages.

The fingerprint unlock for incognito tab is optional and can be turned on by going to “Chrome Settings > Privacy and security> Lock Incognito tabs when you leave Chrome: Use screen lock to see open Incognito tabs.”

Verification is required when enabling or disabling fingerprint unlock for incognito tab, but you can also use your PIN. The splash screen appears right after you exit Chrome. It can be useful when handing over your phone to someone who doesn’t know your passcode.

Google announced today that the feature is “currently rolling out to Android users” in conjunction with Data Privacy Day. Although it is not yet widely available (as of Chrome 109), you can enable this flag to enable the feature.
