Latest Fitbit Charge 5 update supposedly causing battery drain

The Fitbit Charge 5 fitness tracker is a terrific way to measure your activity without wearing a complete smartwatch, but a Fitbit Charge 5 update has caused some devices to fail. The device recently got an update that seems to have broken something, as users report serious battery drain.

Further details on the latest Fitbit Charge 5 update

Fitbit published a new Fitbit charge 5 update with the version number 194.61 around two weeks ago. The small update was intended to include all workout modes to the tracker’s exercise app, display the Daily Readiness Score directly on the Charge 5 for Premium customers, increase language support, enhance clock faces, and contain the regular bug repairs.

Unfortunately, the update appears to be causing problems for Fitbit Charge 5 customers, who are reporting that their trackers are faulty after installation, as noted in a forum discussion. The problem, as initially reported by Android Authority, is that the gadget suffers from excessive battery depletion. The Charge 5 is meant to last many days on a single charge, however with the update, it only lasts a day or less for some people. The larger issue appears to be that some devices are bricking completely, rendering them unresponsive and useless.

Support is not provided to replace the gadget, but rather a 35% discount on new hardware if the tracker is still under warranty. Although the gadget was only released in 2021, Fitbit only provides a one-year warranty from the date of purchase. Even yet, given that the malfunctioning device was caused by a Fitbit  Charge 5 update, Fitbit should provide a free remedy to the problem.

In any event, if the update hasn’t already been installed, you should switch off your Charge 5, since auto-update may install the problematic version otherwise.
