It came as a surprise when the Mi 9 SE started receiving a stable MIUI 12.5 update that brought Android 11 before the flagship Mi 9 in China. The rollout was followed by the global rollout, while the latter was still running Android 10 on top of MIUI 12. That changed a couple of days ago, though, when Xiaomi released the much-anticipated update for its 2019 flagship phone. And now, the global Android 11-based MIUI 12.5 update for the Mi 9 has been released for limited users to preview for bugs.
However, it will take a few days for the preview, and If in the end, no major bug is detected, the update will start seeding for the public. It has a version number – MIUI 12.5.1.0 RFAMIXM – and brings along the expected features, which are essentially an improvement. They include instant response to gestures, optimization to make MIUI faster, smoother, and lighter. The update has reduced power consumption and background memory usage to improve system performance. Aside from those features, Android version is now 11, while the security patch level is on May 2021 version.
Unfortunately, the update failed to address some Android 11 issues. The third-party launcher compatibility problem is there with the ugly square chat bubbles. After upgrading your device, you’ll need to revert to the system launcher unless the system will keep crashing. And given that the update is the first MIUI based Android 11 update for the device, we recommend that you backup your data before upgrading. That’s because 80% of issues encountered after upgrading were fixed by performing a factory reset.
Concerning when the update will get to more regions, there’s currently no ETA. However, you can follow our tracker page to know when the update becomes available in your region.
