Google has joined forces with iFixit since 2022 to offer official repair parts and guidance for almost all Pixel devices. This collaboration allows users to engage in do-it-yourself repairs, tackling common issues such as battery replacement, screen repairs, and charging port fixes. Notably, Google has confirmed to 9to5Google that this trend will continue with the highly anticipated Pixel Fold.
This development holds significant importance as it marks the first foldable device to provide DIY repair options. In contrast, due to the delicate nature of their displays and intricate foldable designs, Samsung has limited repair options for their Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip handsets to in-store and mail-in services only. However, Google aims to bridge this gap by offering both in-store and mail-in repair choices for the Pixel Fold.
A Google official shared insights with 9to5Google, stating, “We offer mail-in and walk-in repair services for Pixel Fold outside the warranty period (out-of-warranty repair). We are also planning Google Pixel Fold parts, repair guides, and tools available via iFixit.” This reaffirms Google’s commitment to empowering users to take control of their device’s maintenance and repairs.
Furthermore, Google plans to extend its support by introducing an Extended Warranty program called Preferred Care specifically for the Pixel Fold. This offering will provide coverage against accidental damages and mechanical breakdowns beyond the warranty period. Customers can choose between monthly plans or one-time payments, ensuring that their Pixel Fold remains protected. If repairs are necessary, customers can have their device fixed or replaced, with a deductible depending on the circumstances.
Google’s collaboration with iFixit ensures that users will have access to “genuine spare parts” for the Pixel Fold, including components such as batteries, screens, and charging assemblies. Additionally, adhesives and step-by-step instructions will be provided, enabling users to approach repairs with confidence and clarity.
