Google to separate Ringing volume and notification in an upcoming update

We still have software updates that will be coming from Google(of course, Android has to keep running). But two of the recent ones to expect are the Android 14 and the Android 13 QPR3. Hidden within either of these updates is the separating of the Ringing volume and notification. The Ringing volume and notification are two features that have been bound throughout the past releases – well, not anymore.

Previous status of the Ringing volume and notification

Ringing volume and notification were a slider spotted in the Sound and notification section of settings(together with three more sliders to make four). This was thanks to an ADB command spotted in the Android 13 QPR2 Beta 1. We got to the stable version of the QPR2 without seeing any separation but that has changed via a new ADB command – “adb shell device_config put system volume_separate_notification true”.

Google updated the “[Feature Request] Please allow to have separate volume bars for notification and ringtone sounds!” entry in Android’s issue tracker from December of 2021 with the following: “The requested feature will be available in a future build.” With 47 comments, the status is now changed to “Fixed.” Well, that makes five sliders now with the Ringing volume and notification separate.

According to the roadmap, it’s uncertain whether the notification/ringtone volume modification would be included in the June stable release of Android 13 QPR3, or Android 14. It is not yet available in 13 QPR3 Beta 3 or 14 Beta 1.1.

At this point in the development cycle, a forthcoming release of Android 14, and a following beta, is more plausible, although it’s still theoretically possible for Android 13, which will cease receiving major upgrades after the June release. This would improve the quality of life for people who prefer not to hear incoming calls but want to hear alerts, or vice versa.
