From the groundbreaking Apple iPhone X to the cutting-edge iPhone 14 series, one noticeable trend has been the closeness to a full bezel-less display in each successive iPhone iteration. Apple has been on a relentless quest to maximize screen real estate and deliver an immersive user experience. Now, according to insider sources, the tech giant is setting its sights on an ambitious goal – achieving a full bezel-less display for future iPhones. Let’s dive into the intriguing details of this remarkable development.

Apple iPhones is moving to a full bezel-less display

Full bezel-less display for iPhones?

Apple is reportedly in discussions with its trusted OLED manufacturers, Samsung Display and LG Display, to spearhead the creation of bezel-free OLED screens – full bezel-less display. The roadmap is two-fold: in the short term, Apple aims to minimize bezels on the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models, and in the long run, they aspire to bring the dream of a truly bezel-less display to life. This futuristic vision entails eliminating any camera cutout and achieving bezels as thin as technologically feasible.

However, it’s important to emphasize the key term here: “possible.” Despite the determination, Apple faces several significant challenges in its pursuit of a fully bezel-less display. One such obstacle is the under-panel camera (UPC) technology, which allows the front-facing camera to hide beneath the display. As of now, the outer film layer is too thick to support this under-display camera, presenting an engineering challenge that needs to be overcome.

Additionally, there’s the intricate issue of thin-film encapsulation (TFE), a crucial element in protecting OLED displays from moisture and oxygen. The TFE involves stacking an inorganic film with an organic film, where the inorganic layer acts as a barrier against moisture and oxygen, while the organic film fills holes in the inorganic layer. Balancing the right combination of these films presents a formidable task for Apple’s display manufacturers.

Another factor complicating the process is Apple’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a flat display for its iPhones. This design choice makes it challenging to bend the screen circuits in the bottom bezel, which further adds to the complexities of creating a seamless bezel-less device. Additionally, Apple seems reluctant to adopt curved displays, given concerns over distortion at the corners and potential issues with durability.

Considering these formidable challenges, it becomes evident that achieving a full bezel-less display iPhone is a formidable engineering feat that will take time. As of now, it seems that the goal is still years away from fruition. Nevertheless, Apple’s persistence and dedication to pushing the boundaries of innovation leave little doubt that the tech giant will eventually deliver a groundbreaking device that captures the essence of a borderless visual experience.
