Memory Extension feature removed on few Xiaomi phones after Android 12 upgrade

The Memory Extension feature first came to Xiaomi phones a few months ago. It first features on Mi 10 Ultra before becoming available for more users under the closed beta group. With the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced update, the feature has become widely available. Even mid-range and entry-level Xiaomi phones have the feature enabled. However, it seems Xiaomi has had the Memory Extension feature removed for some of its phones, and we are yet to know the reason.

Memory Extension feature removed

For starters, the Memory Extension feature on Xiaomi phones converts part of the internal memory into a virtual RAM. Depending on your device’s memory configuration, you can be allowed up to 3GB of virtual RAM. However, many people believe the feature isn’t useful, as they haven’t seen the practical effects. Perhaps, what would a device with up to 8GB or 12GB of RAM need extra RAM for, meaning the feature should be targeted to budget phones if actually, it works.

Of course, virtual RAM is effective. However, you won’t notice any significant changes in the device performance, but it’d allow the device to hold more applications in the memory, having increased the capacity of your phone. And it seems Xiaomi hasn’t seen the effect on some of its phones and has decided to remove it.

According to a recent report, Xiaomi had the Memory Extension feature removed from the Mi 11 Ultra, Redmi K40 / POCO F3, and others. Perhaps, it seems those that have upgraded to Android 12 have the feature disabled on their phones. However, the Xiaomi Mi 10 series that recently got the Android 12 update still have this feature.

It’s unclear whether the company intentionally disabled the function from some of its devices or was just an omission. Either way, we hope to find out soon, and besides, since the function doesn’t necessarily improve your device performance, we don’t think you should worry about that.

  • This bullshit phone after disabling memory extension cannot set it back, because 5GB memory free isnt enough. Also it holds less application with this function off than before without this function. Really great.
