It was a surprise when the news of MIUI 12.5 broke on the internet a couple of days ago. And to bring the intermediary Android skin to eligible devices, Xiaomi has suspended the development of MIUI 12 so that engineers can focus on the next iteration, which will improve system optimization and stability. The next upgrade – MIUI 12.5 might debut later this month alongside the Mi 11 series, which is expected to launch on December 29.
The MIUI 12.5, according to Xiaomi’s head of software department, Jin Fan, will be released before the end of this year. And since the Mi 11 series has been alleged to debut later this month, it makes sense that the next MIUI skin will be announced that day as well. Also, since the upgrade is to prepare Xiaomi phones for the MIUI 13, it means the company won’t be organizing a separate event as it did with the MIUI 12. However, we hope to learn more about the launch date of the MIUI 12.5 in the coming days.
Xiaomi is expected to bring, in addition to optimization and stability, lots of other features with the MIUI 12.5. Going by the previous report, features expected to debut alongside the MIUI 12.5 include photo conversion to PDF in the gallery app, desktop mode, a new power menu, new application animation, new cleaner UI, floating window for notification. There’s also a new 5G toggle, which will come in handy when switching between 5G bands.
Also, the update is going to bring the new Android OS – Android 11 to the likes of Redmi K20 Pro, Redmi Note 8, and Redmi Note 8 Pro, among other Xiaomi phones, with the next MIUI development build. The development phase is the first step before public rollout starts, and hence, we’ll start expecting a wider rollout once beta testers get the update.
We also have a provisional list of Xiaomi phones that will receive the MIUI 12.5 update. You can check for your device here as we wait for the official list from the company. We expect the official list of the devices to receive the update on the launch day, which according to the software department executive, should be in a couple of days from today.
