The latest Google Messages app shows an important RCS badge

From time to time, Google adds a thing or two to their software to improve the user’s experience and sometimes, for some aesthetics as well. The latest Google Messages app will be showing an important RCS badge following a new tweak.

The latest Google Messages app

The latest Google Messages app introduces a new feature that displays a Message symbol in the bottom-right corner of profile avatars for RCS (Rich Communication Services) chats. This symbol, which is a condensed version of the app logo with Dynamic Color theming, is specifically associated with RCS chats, both group and individual, on the home screen.

Previously, distinguishing between RCS and SMS/MMS threads required launching a chat and checking the text box for indications like “RCS message” or “Text message.” With the new branding approach, Google aims to highlight the Messages logo as a representation of RCS functionality. Notably, features like Magic Compose currently only work with RCS and not SMS.

It’s important to note that this RCS badge is likely still undergoing testing, as it appears in the beta version of the Google Messages app (20230615_02_RC00) released recently. Google has been experimenting with various ways to indicate RCS support, such as displaying updated read receipts in the chat list. While these changes have been observed in previous versions, their full implementation is still pending.

Additionally, a recent makeover that eliminated the navigation drawer and moved its contents to the profile menu has been reverted. By integrating the latest Google Messages app, users can enjoy improved visibility and recognition of RCS chats through the newly introduced Message symbol, contributing to a more seamless messaging experience.
