The latest Google TV update to improve performance and free storage

Chromecast with Google TV had a nice start and was recently made available to a few European countries. However, there have been some issues with performance and storage and the latest Google TV update seems to address these problems.

In the case of storage, 9to5google’s Kyle Bradshaw noticed that he couldn’t download a few apps even though he was assigned a storage space of 8GB. He later found out that it was just 4GB of storage that was available. Addressing this issue with the latest Google TV update is something expected from a lot of users out there.

9to5google also noted in their review that the performance was below expectations. “The performance here is what I’d called adequate. It’s not impressive by any measurement, but it runs relatively smoothly without any major hiccups… Where I saw a bottleneck in Chromecast’s performance was with the Google TV home screen.”

Well, since the Chromecast with Google TV is hardware that has been available for two years, the latest Google TV update is in a way bringing the whole setup back to life.

What’s with the latest Google TV update?

First up, the brand introduced a “Free up space” button in the settings menu via the latest Google TV update. Although this was available in Chromecast with Google TV before now, it will be made available to other smart TVs running Google TV. Adding to this, there will be some tweaks to the storage section to avoid seeing storage error messages frequently, especially when trying to install an app.

While we are not certain about what exactly the tweaks are, the Big G mentions over email that the space will be coming from app cache files and other stuff. In terms of performance, the latest Google TV update will be bringing in a smooth feel with the Chromecast with Google TV, thanks to the “CPU optimizations and improvements to cache management”.

Furthermore, the brand said Switching between Kids Profiles will be faster, courtesy of image caching improvements, users will be getting faster loading times for the “For You” and “Live” tab and there will be better RAM optimization to keep the background processes and memory app running.

Still in the grey area as to when we would receive the latest Google TV update, the “Free Up Space” button is already present on the Chromecast with Google TV. Others should be coming in very soon.
