Xiaomi tops Indian new record smartphone shipment in Q3 2020

Xiaomi, for some years now, has been dominating the Indian smartphone market ahead of Samsung. Early this year, due to the effect of the ongoing COVID-19, smartphone shipment reached an all-time low of almost 50% drop. However, it seems those dark days are behind OEMs as India records a high smartphone shipment in Q3 2020.

According to the latest report from Canalys, a tracking firm, India smartphone shipment exceeded 50 million in Q3 2020, which is a new record. The statistics show a year-on-year growth of 8% from Q3 2019 when the total smartphone shipment was said to be 46.2 million.

The growth, according to Varun Kannan, Canalys analyst, is a result of lockdown restrictions, which was why the Q1 2020 shipment in the country hit an all-time low. He said that easing of the lockdown “created the perfect atmosphere for sustained growth.”

Also, according to the Analyst, the Chinese brands are the highest gainers here. They account for 74% of devices shipped in India in Q3 2020. Meanwhile, compared to last year, there’s only a slight drop, which is even surprisingly considering the India and China dispute.

Among the Chinese brands that constitute the India smartphone shipment is Xiaomi. The Chinese OEM holds a 26.1% market share, having shipped 13.1 million units in Q3 2020. Compared to last year, when the company was able to ship 12 million units, which amount to a 25.9% market share, is about 9% growth.

Second, on the list is Samsung. The South Korean company was able to ship 10.2 million units, which is about 20.4% market share. Compared to the 9.5 million units shipped last year, it is about 7% growth.

Other OEMs on the list include Vivo with 7.4 million shipments, Realme ( 7.1 million), Oppo (5.7 million), while other OEMs could ship just 4.5 million units.
