It’s one of those times when we get the smartphone shipment report for a particular time of the year to see how Apple and Android OEMs performed in the market. What we have now(from sources) is the smartphone shipment report for Q2 2023. Let’s see how the market trend went.
Details of the Q2 2023 smartphone shipment report
The smartphone market in the US experienced a significant decline in the second quarter of 2023, with shipments dropping by 24% year on year. This marks the third consecutive quarter of declining revenue for the industry. Among the major manufacturers, Samsung, Motorola, and TCL-Alcatel saw the most significant declines in shipments. Samsung’s shipments were down by 37%, Motorola’s by 17%, and TCL-Alcatel’s by a staggering 69%. In contrast, Apple’s shipments only fell by 6%, which is seen as a positive sign for the upcoming iPhone 15 series.
Google was the only company that managed to grow its exports, with a 48% increase in shipments. Despite not having a significant market share to begin with, this growth is notable. In terms of market share, Apple continued to dominate with a 55% share, followed by Samsung with 23%, and Motorola with 9% in the second quarter of 2023.
However, there is a silver lining in the foldable smartphone market, which is performing exceptionally well. The introduction of new foldable devices from various manufacturers, such as Motorola’s Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra, and Google’s Pixel Fold, has contributed to the growth in this segment. The recent releases of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are expected to further boost the foldable market in the fourth quarter. The decline in smartphone sales is attributed to economic turbulence, with people being hesitant to upgrade their devices. Analysts expect the low upgrade rates to continue through the third quarter.
