Android 11 might have a higher adoption when compared to the previous iteration of Android OS, but some Xiaomi phones are yet to receive it for the first time. Back on December 28, 2020, just after the official presentation of MIUI 12.5, Xiaomi released the update alongside Android 11 to Redmi K20 Pro / Mi 9T Pro users participating in closed beta tests. And six months later, the company starts pushing the update to the public. It’s still a limited rollout, though, pending when the preview is completed for the public rollout to commence.
Xiaomi Android 11 builds had some bugs in it, something the company is addressing with MIUI 12.5. In essence, the Android 11 based MIUI 12.5 update for Redmi K20 Pro / Mi 9T Pro is free from these bugs. It’s fair to say that the update is safe, but you should back up your data before installing the update. That’s recommended in a situation where a factory reset is required after the cross-section Android upgrade.
Meanwhile, the update has a version number – MIUI 12.5.4.0 RFKCNXM – and weighs in at 2.8GB (Full Recovery). As expected, it brings the features of the latest iteration of MIUI OS, which includes improved gesture responsiveness. And with a few optimizations, MIUI has become faster, smoother, and lighter. There’s now 20x more rendering power to improve the display performance of Xiaomi phones. Finally, a stable MIUI based on Android 11 is included in the package.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any idea when Xiaomi plans to extend the rollout to global units. That’ll probably take some time, but seeing the Mi 9 SE start receiving the update a few weeks after the Chinese rollout makes us believe the same treatment for Redmi K20 Pro / Mi 9T Pro. That said, you should follow our tracker to know when the update arrives in your region.
