Apple iPhone without a notch: here is when to expect all glass front panel
With every generation of iPhones, there have to be one or two tweaks, and most of the time, they have to do with the display. Well, predictions say that there will be an Apple iPhone without a notch. Let’s take a look at what iPhones we will be seeing over the coming years.
Apple iPhone without a notch?
Earlier this month, one of the most trusted sources, Ross Young, claimed that Apple was experiencing sensor troubles, leading the under-display Face ID technology it is developing to be delayed until 2025 or later. Young is the co-founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), and he tweeted a timeline of how the iPhone display will change over the next four years today.
But bear in mind that an under-display Face ID might result in various modifications to the iPhone. It might result in even lower bezels and offer Apple the opportunity to kill Dynamic Island. The latter is a shapeshifting notification system that replaced the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Plus and will be available on all four iPhone 15 models this year.
According to Young’s schedule, the iPhone 19 Pro models will feature a display with no cutouts by 2027. That’s true, the iPhone 19 Pro and iPhone 19 Ultra will be entirely “all-screen.” Yet, as Young suggests, let’s examine how we get there. The Dynamic Island will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Ultra, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Ultra. That will change in 2025 with the release of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Ultra.
Such devices will include an under-display Face ID sensor as well as a hole for the front-facing FaceTime camera. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Ultra will appear the same in 2026. That will change with the iPhone 19, thanks to the under-display Face ID and Face Time camera, which will enable the aforementioned “all-screen” design.
The Dynamic Island and 60Hz refresh rate will be available on non-Pro devices until the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Plus arrive in 2025. The non-Pro versions will retain the Dynamic Island but will feature a refresh rate of 120Hz. This is repeated for non-Pro iPhone 18 models in 2026 but changes in 2027 when the iPhone 19 and iPhone 19 Plus ditch the Dynamic Island in favor of Under-Display Face ID and a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing Face ID.
While Young only goes as far as 2027, we believe that by 2028 or 2029, both the Pro and non-Pro iPhone models will have adopted the “all-screen” design. The ultimate objective is to remove all ports, allowing the iPhone to be a glass slab with no buttons. According to reports, this was the initial design for the original iPhone that former Apple design leader Jony Ive had in mind.
