If you’re seeing a YouTube green screen error with sound on your computer, it usually means that your computer is outputting a video signal that is not compatible with your display. This can be caused by a number of things, including cable connectivity issues, outdated drivers, or incompatible video settings.

In most cases, you can fix the YouTube Green Screen error by simply disabling hardware acceleration, updating your drivers or changing your video settings.

Here are a list of things you can try to fix the YouTube Green Screen issue.

1. Use a Different Browser

Before going technical to fix this error, it might be worth trying out a different browser to see if it fixes the problem. Although this error occurs in all browsers, it is mostly profound in the Internet explorer browser. If you get the error on a particular browser, try switching to another browser to see if the green screen error is still there. If it is not, then you can confirm that the problem is from the previous browser used. However, if it is still there, then you can try one of the troubleshooting methods below.

2. Disable hardware acceleration settings

Hardware acceleration is most likely the cause of the YouTube Green Screen error, and disabling it can fix the problem.

In Internet Explorer

  • Type internet options in the search field, and click on it from the displayed result.
  • Go to Advanced tab and check the Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering box.
  • Click Apply, and then OK.

In Chrome

  • Click the menu icon in the top right corner, and select Settings from the menu.
  • Click on Systems. 
  • Turn off the Use hardware acceleration when available switch by toggling it backwards.
  • Close Settings and restart the Chrome browser.

In Firefox

  • Select Settings from the menu icon in the top right corner of Firefox.
  • From the General section, scroll down to the Performance section.
  • Untick the Use recommended performance settings and Use hardware acceleration when available boxes.
  • Close the options tab and restart Firefox.

3. Change your display resolution

  1. Press the Win+R keys to open the Run prompt.
  2. In the run box, type control and click OK.
  3. Select Small icons under Category.
  4. Click on Display.
  5. Select Change display settings from the left side of the Control Panel.
  6. From the displayed window, click on Advanced Settings. 
  7. Click on the Monitor tab and select High Color 16 bit.
  8. Click on the Apply button and then select Advanced settings.
  9. Navigate to the Troubleshooting tab.
  10. Click on Change settings and drag the hardware acceleration pointer to the left.
  11. Click OK to save changes.

4. Update your graphic card drivers

An old or outdated graphic drivers can cause YouTube to display the green screen error, hence you will need to update the drivers. Follow the steps below to update your drivers:

  • Launch the Windows Search and type in device manager, and then press Enter.
  • Click on Display adapter’s in the Device Manager window.
  • Right-click on the display driver, and choose Update driver.

5. Confirm that Javascript is Enabled

Javascript is necessary for the correct functionality of web browsers, so if it isn’t enabled on your browser, you may likely face the green screen error on YouTube.

To enable Javascript on Chrome, type chrome://settings/content/javascript in the address bar and punch the Enter key. Confirm that javascript is enabled for websites.

Enter edge://settings/content/javascript in the address bar and press Enter. Enable websites to use Javascript if it’s not already enabled.
