Memory Extension feature arrives for Mi 11/ Pro/ Ultra, Mi 10 / Pro / Ultra, Redmi K40 / POCO F3 / Mi 11X

Xiaomi starts extending the Memory Extension feature to more devices after the initial rollout. It was first spotted by a developer, Kacper Skrzypek, after a careful examination of the MIUI source code. Then, it was called ‘Memory Extension’ but could only allocate 1GB ‘maximum’ of the internal storage to the RAM. Of course, that has seen some improvement in the past weeks and has since arrived for select devices. According to the report, the Memory Extension is currently seeding for more Xiaomi phones.

Memory Extension feature

The Memory Extension feature is essentially a function that allocates part of the internal memory to the RAM when handling demanding applications. That’s a proactive measure as it only works when an app starts pushing the device to its limits. However, the toggle has to be enabled for this to work, and as expected, Xiaomi is integrating it into select devices. Meanwhile, you can only use it when there’s enough storage left on your device. Perhaps, more than 3GB as that’s the maximum that can be added to the RAM as against the initial 1GB.

The Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G received this feature a couple of weeks ago. It arrived for stable ROM users unlike the current rollout, which is limited to closed beta testers. The latest Chinese Closed beta update has seemingly enabled the Memory Extension feature on select phones. The feature has been enabled on the Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11 Pro, Mi 11, Mi 10 Ultra, Mi 10 Pro, Mi 10, Redmi K40/ POCO F3 / Mi 11X, K40 Pro / Plus. Apparently, all Xiaomi phones that debuted with Snapdragon 888 / 870/ 865 have this feature enabled.

However, Xiaomi is limiting the feature to the Chinese branch of MIUI. For now, only those participating in the closed beta test have the feature enabled. We expect global availability with MIUI 13, and if the reports are legit, Xiaomi will unveil its next iteration of MIUI next month.
