We were all expecting MIUI 13 until Xiaomi announced it’ll bring an intermediary version of its Android skin. It announced the MIUI 12.5 build on December 28, 2020, and looking at the features, it essentially an improvement over the MIUI 12. Those running the stable MIUI 12 build keep complaining of bugs, which Xiaomi acknowledged in their last Q&A session. One of Xiaomi’s executives said that the stability of MIUI has dwindled in the last few years. According to him, the company hasn’t done much to improve MIUI. However, they promise to improve the fluidity and also fix all stability issues with MIUI 12.5.
Xiaomi, in the past years, has focused on adding features with little to no focus on optimizing and improving the stability of the existing features. That’s probably, what resulted in the buggy, and laggy MIUI builds. Also, the amount of work required for the adaptation of Android 11 contributed to the laggy build. Android 11 poses problems to developers with the changes Google made in performance. There are also stability and adaptation issues with third-party applications. In addition,” the investment in research and development of many new machines and brand-new hardware platforms, these problems combined, led to a steady decline in the version.”
Interestingly, the company has said they’ll improve the fluency and stability of the MIUI this year. That is evident in the features of MIUI 12.5, which promises a smooth, faster, and light system. Power consumption and background memory usage has been optimized, and so far, things are looking promising.
Having improved the power consumption of MIUI, the computing resources required in rendering Super wallpaper will reduce. Xiaomi also promised a redesign, and that’ll optimize the performance. As for bugs being faced by Mi Fans, especially when launching and closing apps. The company said it’s currently working on a special project to improve the full-screen gestures.
While acknowledging the issues with unlocking animation, the company said they already fixed most of the scenes. According to the company, “At present, we have found two scenes (the folder or the screen disappeared under the recent task), which will be fixed soon. After the repair, we will update the desktop through the application store to solve this problem, no OTA system is required.”
Xiaomi promised to push a new control center to the beta branch of MIUI soon. Hopefully, the new control center will address all the issues being faced by Mi Fans. Lastly, the company cleared the air on why its flagship phones: Mi 11 Ultra and Mi 11 Pro, didn’t run MIUI 12.5 outside-of-the-box. Here is what the company said, “Before the phone is released, production and stocking will start long in advance, so it will be equipped with the latest MIUI stable version at the time of production of these phones. Therefore, Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra are not equipped with MIUI 12.5 stable version.”
A lot was discussed, and hopefully, MIUI 12.5 is all Mi fans have been waiting for. Also, there have been positive signs, given the feedback from those running the latest iteration of MIUI already. Nevertheless, we’ll wait until more people get the latest iteration of MIUI to see where it racks up with previous versions.
