MIUI updates

NETFLIX HDR support on Redmi Note 8 Pro gone after the Android 10 upgrade

Xiaomi has been pushing out Android 10 to Redmi Note 8 Pro for weeks now. The update first arrived for Indian ROM users and was later pushed to the EU variant. It started arriving on the Global units a few days ago, but even at that, most global users haven’t got the update yet. However, the update will eventually arrive on every unit, and because it’s a staged rollout, that’s why it seems to be taking some time before arriving.

Meanwhile, the update is coming with some new features such as updated security patch, “NETFLIX HD” support, along with bug fixes and system optimization. But then, the Netflix HDR support on Redmi Note 8 Pro is gone. The device supported the feature on Android Pie but vanished immediately after the Android 10 upgrade.

After the upgrade, the DRM app shows the phone doesn’t support Netflix HDR again. It’s possible Xiaomi intentionally limited video playbacks on Netflix app to HDR because it is stated clearly on the update Changelog. But why support Widevine L1 and then limit some of the features? The Note 8 Pro screen supports HDR, and besides, that particular feature was there with Android 9. Maybe, the company thinks it’s not important as not many people make use of it.

The truth is that most people now make use of the Netflix app, even more at this time of COVID-19 pandemic. Xiaomi should fix this issue ASAP, with a new update. There’s every need to bring back Netflix HDR support on Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Meanwhile, if you’re still waiting for the Android 10 update, we have the official Global ROM. You can download and manually flash on your phone. But then, we won’t be responsible for any damage it might cause, better wait for the OTA to arrive if you haven’t flashed MIUI ROM before. Nevertheless, this post on how to flash MIUI ROM on Xiaomi phones might help.
