While smartphone makers are now equipping their most affordable phone with HDR support, it still doesn’t allow users to enjoy the full benefits, especially when it comes to supporting HDR video playback on Netflix.

The issue is the device, not Widevine certified. The Widevine certificate is required by all content streaming platforms for HDR streaming. But unfortunately, even when your device is Widevine certified, there is a possibility that it doesn’t support HDR video playback on Netflix.

The reason is that with Widevine L1 support, additional approval is also required from Netflix. Therefore, a device without the extra approval won’t support HDR video playback on Netflix.

HDR video playback on Netflix enhance the overall image quality by offering a high-dynamic-range…a video quality with a wide range of brightness and more lifelike detail. The platform also has support for HDR10…a video quality that’s compatible with any device that’s Widevine certified. It improves the brightness of your videos up to 1000nits and a color depth of at least 10bits.

Meanwhile, almost all Xiaomi phones debut with Widevine certificate but only a few get the extra approval from Netflix to stream videos in HDR on their platform. Below is the list of Xiaomi phones that support HDR video playback on Netflix

You device only support HD video streaming when it’s Widevine certified. Widevine DRM certification ( Digital Right Management), it’s a standard for protecting content. They’re leading encryption scheme for safely licensing distributing and protecting video playback on any consumer device. Its a way of making sure that content creators and media companies monetize their content across every device.

How to check if your device has Widevine certificate

To check your device certificate, download from Playstore DRM info app. After downloading, launch the app and check the DRM level under “Google Widevine Modular DRM” Android phones only support Widevine DRM L1 [HD streaming] and L3 [ 3D streaming] certificates.
